Regional History
St. Charles: Les Petites Côtes
By Dianna Graveman and Don Graveman
Foreword by Mayor Patti York
Arcadia Publishing
In 1769, French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette built a cabin on the Missouri River in what is today St. Charles. He called the settlement Les Petites Côtes, or The Little Hills. Other now famous explorers soon passed this way, including Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who began their expedition here in 1804 to explore the Louisiana Purchase territory. Daniel Boone forged a path through St. Charles along the Boone’s Lick Trail, which later joined the Santa Fe Trail and then the Oregon Trail. Today St. Charles hosts many annual events to celebrate its rich history and transport visitors to the past. However, the site of Missouri’s first state capitol has not survived without tragedy and an occasional natural disaster, including a cholera epidemic, tornadoes, floods, and a couple of devastating railroad bridge accidents.
Over two hundered images from the St. Charles County Historical Society’s archives and other sources dramatically illustrate the colorful history of this once small river town. The foreword is written by Mayor Patti York, in honor of the city's 2009 bicentennial.

Non Fiction/Memoir
Growing Up With My Best Friend
By Jan Huntsinger
American Book
Never before have the simpler, innocent times of America’s past been put so wonderfully into words. Jan Huntsinger, in her friendly, conversational style of writing, invites us to join her as she takes us back to the times of her youth in 1950’s Independence, Missouri. You’ll be there as she relives all the fun, simple pleasures that made growing up in the era so memorable. Be it chasing after the ice cream truck, family trips to the Grand Tetons, weeding out dandelions in the backyard, the trials and tribulations of grade school and high school, or even mastering the awkwardness of ballroom dancing, Jan recalls it all with nostalgic fondness and laughter, making the reader feel a part of her treasured childhood.. This is the kind of book to not only be read for your own pleasure, but a keepsake to pass along to your children and friends, to show them what life was like for children and teens in post-war America, and how the simplest things in life can be the most rewarding.
