Annual President’s Contests

MWG President’s Contests are open to active members of the Missouri Writers Guild with membership dues paid in full for 2016-17 prior to entering, and this year, many categories are also open to NON-members! You may enter more than one contest, but only one entry per contest. An editor of a multiple-author Chapter anthology must be a member and can enter the complete book, with individual authors published in the anthology eligible to enter their work in appropriate individual categories.

Works must have been published during the previous calendar year (2016).

The entry fee for all contests is $15.

Deadline for all submissions is February 15th of the contest year (2017).

Walter Williams Award

First Prize: $100, a plaque, and recognition at the May MWG Conference

Second Prize: $50, a certificate, and recognition at the May MWG Conference

Third Prize: $25, a certificate, and recognition at the May MWG Conference

Named in honor of the founder of the Missouri Writers’ Guild. This should be a major work, whether in book form or in some other form of publication, that is worthy of special recognition because of research or the high literary quality involved in its creation.

The award is open to any type of publication or production including fiction, non-fiction, scripts, poetry (poetry collection in book form), books, and anthologies. Self-published books are not allowed in this category.

“Show Me” Best Book Award

First Prize: $50, a certificate, and recognition at the May MWG Conference

Second Prize: $25, a certificate, and recognition at the May MWG Conference

Third Prize: $15, a certificate, and recognition at the May MWG Conference

This is an award for a work published in book form; fiction, poetry, or non-fiction. The book must have Missouri incorporated into it, showing the appreciation for the people, land, and culture of the state.

Best Chapter Anthology (sponsored by Rock Springs Review)

Best Juvenile Book

This award is for a work of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry published in book for. The book must be written for and show appreciation for children—those “pint-sized” beings who are our greatest critics.

May be published in a magazine, newspaper, book, or anthology, and be paid in dollars or copies.

Best Juvenile Short Work (sponsored by Boonslick Creative Writers)

This would include short stories, magazine or newspaper articles, and poetry which could be published in a book or anthology. Should be for children and paid in dollars or copies.

Best Poem

May be published in a magazine, newspaper, book, or anthology, and be paid in dollars or copies.

Rules and Guidelines

  1. In cases of co-authorship, both authors must meet this criteria. The editor of a multiple-author Chapter anthology must be a member and can enter the complete book, with individual authors published in the anthology eligible to enter their work in appropriate individual categories.
  2. All works must have been published, presented, or performed in the 2016 calendar year. The Entry fee for all contests is $15.
  3. Entries must have received a royalty or fee for the writer, whether from a publisher or through self publishing.Payment in contributor copies does not count, except for categories:  Best Short Story, Best Poem, and Best Short Juvenile.

5. For all other categories, the writer must have been paid by  the publisher, including self-publishing, or publication for his or her work.

6. Audio or electronic entries (book, newspaper or magazine) may be entered in any appropriate category.

7. A member may enter multiple categories.

8. A member may enter only one submission per category.

9. A member may not submit the same work in more than one category.

10. Use your own judgement as to which category is the most appropriate.

11. All books must have an ISBN number.

Submission Procedures for President’s Contests

Poor quality submissions will be disqualified. Your entry represents the Missouri Writers’ Guild to the judges. Therefore, entries that are tattered, smeared, difficult to read, poor quality photocopy, or otherwise unprofessional looking may be disqualified. Must include publication data including date.

  1. Books:

Send one copy (1) of print book. Send tape and manuscript of audio book. Send disk and printout of e-book. Books will not be returned, but donated to libraries, schools, or Missouri Writers’ Guild chapters.

  1. Newspaper article, magazine article, Short story, Short juvenile, poem: Send one (1) copy of each entry, as published. (NO manuscript printout except for audio works.) Photocopies are acceptable for articles and poems. Send printout of electronic publications, manuscript of audio.
  2. Columns: Send copies of three (3) representative columns as published. (NO manuscript printout except for audio works.) Photocopies are acceptable for columns.
  3. Scripts: Send manuscript; include date and place of production, number of performances, and audience composition. Audio or video tape of performance is optional.
  4. Materials submitted for the contest will not be returned.
  5. With each entry, send two (2) copies of a cover sheet which includes:
    1. The writer’s name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address
    2. The category and title of the work(s). (e.g. , Walter Williams Award),
    3. For books: the publisher’s name and date of publication
    4. For short works: the name and date of publication, as shown on tear-sheet or copyright page, or name and date of performance, as shown on program and disk.
    5. Entry fee:

Entry fees should be remitted by check or money order payable to the Missouri Writers’ Guild (MWG), or through PayPal, in the total amount for all entries submitted. Include your entry fee or your PayPal receipt printout with your submission. Entry fee in all categories is $15.

7.Disqualification: Entries which do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified and the entry fee will not be returned. Any entries not meeting the requirements of these rules may be disqualified at the discretion of the contest coordinator of the Missouri Writers’ Guild Contest.

8. Acknowledgement: Entries may be acknowledged if entrants include a stamped, self-addressed postcard with the words, “Your entry was received on ___________________.”

9. Entry period/deadline: Submissions for the President’s Contests must be postmarked between January 1, 2017, and midnight February 1, 2017. MWG is not responsible for any lost or misdirected mail or mail with insufficient postage.

Names of contest winners, sponsors, and judges will be posted on the MWG web site in May 2017 and published in the MWG summer 2017 newsletter.

  1. Walter Williams Awards are: First place receives $100, a plaque and a certificate, second place receives a $50 and a certificate, third place receives $25 and a certificate. Honorable mentions may be named at the discretion of the judges and will receive certificates.
  2. “Show Me” Your Best Book Awards are: First place receives $50 and a certificate, second place receives $25 and a certificate, third place receives $15 and a certificate. Honorable mentions may be named at the discretion of the judges and will receive certificates.
  3. Best Juvenile Book Awards are: First place receives $50 and a certificate, second place receives $25 and a certificate, third place receives $15 and a certificate. Honorable mentions may be named at the discretion of the judges and will receive certificates.
  4. Other Category Awards are: First place receives $25 and a certificate, second place receives $15 and a certificate, third place receives $10 and a certificate. Honorable mentions may be named at the discretion of the judges and will receive certificates.
  5. In accordance with Article X, section 3 of the MWG bylaws: Awards may be given at the judges’ discretion. If there are fewer than seven entries in any category, except for the Walter Williams Award, no prizes will be given in that category, unless in the judges’ opinion, the work submitted is of such quality as to merit recognition. Similarly, the Walter Williams Award may be withheld if in the opinion of the judges, no material of sufficient literary merit is submitted.
  6. Awards Presentation. The Annual Missouri Writers’ Guild Conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Executive Center, Columbia, Missouri. The awards will be presented at the banquet on the evening of May 6, 2017.
